The Amalfi Coast is one of the most breathtaking destinations in the world, a place where romance comes to life amidst dramatic cliffs, azure waters, and picturesque villages. Whether you are planning to propose, celebrate an anniversary, or simply enjoy a dreamy holiday with your loved one, this Italian paradise is the perfect setting. With its stunning terraces, elegant restaurants, and historic landmarks, the Amalfi Coast provides endless opportunities for unforgettable moments.

The Amalfi Coast Mistakes That Ruin Most Holidays

The Amalfi Coast is one of Italy’s most desired destinations — and one of the most frequently disappointing when visited without preparation. The gap between expectation and reality is larger here than almost anywhere in Italy.

  • Do not drive unless you genuinely enjoy narrow cliff roads. The SS163 coastal road is single-lane in places, with tour buses coming the other way. Parking in Positano costs €8/hour and spaces fill by 09:00. Use the SITA bus (€2.50) or ferry instead.
  • Stay in Praiano or Atrani, not Positano. Positano is beautiful but costs €300-500/night for a sea view. Praiano (10 minutes west) and Atrani (2 minutes from Amalfi town) offer the same coast at 40-60% less.
  • Ravello is not on the coast — it is above it. Ravello sits 350 metres above sea level. The views are extraordinary, but there is no beach access. Visit for a morning, do not base yourself there if you want the sea.
  • Book restaurants for dinner, not lunch. Lunchtime restaurants on the coast are tourist traps with picture menus. The same towns have excellent family-run places that only open for dinner. Ask your accommodation host for their personal recommendation.
  • Three nights is the minimum. Day trips from Naples or Rome leave you exhausted from travel and unable to see more than one village. Three nights lets you explore by ferry, hike the Path of the Gods, and swim at a beach that is not packed.

What a Romantic Amalfi Trip Actually Costs

The Amalfi Coast has a reputation for being expensive, and in Positano during July-August, it is. But the coast is more affordable than most people think if you choose the right village and season.

Accommodation: A sea-view double room in Positano costs €300-600/night in peak season. The same view in Praiano costs €120-200. In Atrani (a 2-minute walk from Amalfi town), expect €80-150. Shoulder season (May, September-October) drops prices by 30-40% everywhere.

Food: A dinner for two with local wine costs €50-80 at a proper restaurant. Avoid restaurants with picture menus or English-only staff — these consistently charge 30-50% more for lower quality. The best value is always the “menu del giorno” (daily set menu), which local restaurants offer for €15-25 per person including primo, secondo and a glass of wine.

Transport: SITA buses run the entire coast for €2.50 per journey. Ferries between towns cost €8-15 per person. A 24-hour bus pass costs €10. Taxis between Positano and Amalfi cost €50-70, but water taxis can be €100+.

Best value period: Late September to mid-October. The sea is still warm enough for swimming, restaurants are open, and prices are at their lowest before the November closures begin.
