Knowing the region is not enough. Italy organises civil records by comune — the individual town or municipality where your ancestors lived. Without knowing the specific comune, you cannot request records, search the Antenati portal, or trace your family tree beyond your immigrant ancestor.
Here is what opens up once you identify the village.
Births, marriages, and deaths from 1866. Italy introduced civil registration in 1866 following unification. Every comune holds these records. Italy has digitised many of them on the free Antenati portal. You can search them from home.
Church records going back centuries. The Catholic Church kept parish records — baptisms, marriages, burials — from the 16th century onwards. These often survive today in local parish archives or regional diocesan collections.
